Once Upon a Time in Iceland, Day 9: The Blue...
Mostly sunny. Only a little cloudy. Thanks, Iceland. That was a good way to start the last day.
We had our last Icelandic breakfast in the dining room at the Northern Light Inn. I don’t think Eric misses those at all, but I have now incorporated cheese on toast into my breakfast repertoire.
We checked out, stowed our stuff behind reception and began our walk down to the Blue Lagoon,...
Once Upon a Time in Iceland, Day 8: The Reykjanes...
Partly cloudy, partly sunny. We’ll take it.
No waffle maker at the Northern Light Inn. This was the only strike against them though. We had to turn the car in to the airport at 3pm, so we set out early to drive the Reykjanes Peninsula.
We stopped at another pretty graveyard with more great gravestone typography.
We headed down another gravel road, this time out to the Reykjanesviti...
Once Upon a Time in Iceland, Day 7: West Across...
Cloudy with sun breaks. Not bad.
It was time to drive back across the country. Destination: the Northern Light Inn, next to the famous Blue Lagoon and just north of Grindavík on the Reykjanes Peninsula. It was only about 230 miles, but we had places to stop and photos to recreate. We got a move on, but didn’t get more than a kilometer down the road before this happened.
It was October...
Once Upon a Time in Iceland, Day 6: Skaftafell to...
Freakin’ gale force winds and sideways rain.
That’s what greets us in the dining room for breakfast, along with another waffle maker and this time REAL MAPLE SYRUP! I’m still all about the boiled eggs and cheese on toast.
Not deterred by the hurricane outside, we get ready, put a new memory card in my camera, and head out. The forecast says it’s going to get better around...
Once Upon a Time in Iceland, Day 5: The Road to...
Hey, look! Sun! Oh, wait. No.
That’s pretty much how the weather in Iceland goes. You learn to adapt by day five. But after a night of high winds and rain that woke us up multiple times, Iceland greeted us with sunbreaks over the Ytri-Ránga river in the morning. Probably because it was my birthday.
Our little cabin was great, and we can’t recommend Arhús highly enough.
We had a...
Once Upon a Time in Iceland, Day 4: The (Soaking...
Back to rainy and cloudy.
Our day began with the car rental - a silver 4-door Toyota Yaris. Kamilla’s co-worker Tommi hooked us up with a sweet deal through Iceland Music Export. Then we were back at Prikið for breakfast because frankly, nothing else was going to compare at this point. Also, we were ready to get going on our rural Iceland adventure, so sourcing a new breakfast spot was out...
Once Upon a Time in Iceland, Day 3: Reykjavík
OMG IT’S SUNNY!
The hotel breakfast buffet was doing us no favors, so I got on the website for the Grapevine, Reykjavík’s alternative weekly newspaper (well, bi-weekly) to find a place for breakfast and hit the jackpot: Prikið.

Once Upon a Time in Iceland, Day 2: Reykjavík
We woke up to another rainy day, even more so than the day before. We went back to the breakfast buffet at the hotel and discovered the waffle maker. Sadly, what they offered as syrup was some kind of crazy-fake-vanilla-candy-tasting-something that was all wrong. Luckily Eric’s not huge on breakfast in general so we headed back out into the city with the plan of going to Ráðhús Reykjavíkur...
Once Upon a Time in Iceland, Day 1: Reykjavík
On September 24, 2010, Eric and I left Austin for Iceland. This trip was in celebration of our 5th Wedding Anniversary. We got married in Hawai’i, so to mark five years we decided we should go someplace else at least equally as incredible. Iceland definitely did not disappoint.
After a less than restful “overnight” (4hr 40min) flight from Boston, we landed at Keflavík airport...

How do I not know about David Thorne? This guy is awesome.
Absolutely hilarious email exchange, essentially about spec work. Includes pie charts. Smart-assery definitely ensues.

Normally I like it, but right now I really hate being so busy. Not enough fun time, and I really like fun time.
